An emblematic symbol of Normandy and a monument steeped in history, Mont-Saint-Michel has fascinated visitors for over 1,300 years. It was in 708 that Aubert, bishop of Avranches, ordered the construction of the first sanctuary dedicated to the archangel Saint-Michel. Over the centuries, this simple oratory grew into a majestic Benedictine abbey, perched on a rocky islet swept by Europe’s highest tides.

Fortified in the Middle Ages, the Mont resisted the assaults of the Hundred Years’ War, becoming a symbol of faith and resistance. Even today, it retains the allure of a medieval city, with its cobbled streets, ramparts and Gothic abbey that seems to touch the sky. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Mont-Saint-Michel continues to attract pilgrims, visitors and dreamers from all over the world.

A visit to Mont-Saint-Michel can take place in several stages: a tour of the village and ramparts, with a guide, a tour of the abbey, a visit to the museums and an outing in the bay with a prefecture-certified guide. There are a multitude of ways to discover Mont-Saint-Michel as a family, depending on the age of the children, the season and the weather.

Visits can be made with a digital tablet, “family visits” are available on reservation and allow you to go further by pushing the forbidden doors, and a treasure hunt is even organized in the heart of the village and up to the summit of the Merveille.
